The Materia system was implemented in FFXIV patch 1.19 and takes its name from Final Fantasy VII. In FFVII players could find and buy Materia and slot it into their weapons. This gave your character new spells, summons and better attributes. The system in FFXIV: A Realm Reborn shares similarities with this in that Materia slotted into equipment and gives you better attributes but unlike FFVII it is not a method of obtaining spells or summons.
How to get Materia? The fastest way is to buy Materia from Market Board with FFXIV Gil. If you want to make Materia yourself, you must complete the Forging the Spirit quest. The quest giver is Swynbroes, located at The Bonfire in Central Thanalan (23, 13).
Materia is created from equipment once its spiritbond has reached 100%. An item's spiritbond will increase through using it in your daily business by crafting, gathering and battling. Spiritbond will increase slower if you are below the optimal level required to equip it and if the gear is broken (0% durability) you will not gain spiritbond at all. The rate in which you gain spiritbond will be higher for high quality (HQ) items as well as those with Materia already in it. Some equipment cannot be converted to Materia, this is usually equipment that is obtained as special rewards from raids or primal battles. The type of Materia you create from a piece of gear is based on the gear's intended class. For example, when you convert a piece gear intended for pugilist and lancer, you will receive Materia that is ideal for physical, melee damage dealing.
Lower level gear converts into lower tier Materia. Additionally, higher Materia tier require higher level gear for melding.
Different types of gear are converted into different types of Materia.
1).Disciples of War: Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Parry, Skill Speed, Accuracy, Critical Hit Rate, Determination, Elemental Resist.
2).Disciples of Magic: Intelligence, Mind, Vitality, Piety, Spell Speed, Accuracy, Critical Hit Rate, Determination, Elemental Resist.
3).Crafting: Craftsmanship, Control, CP.
4).Gathering: Gathering, Perception, GP.
To attach Materia, you will need to complete the Waking the Spirit quest. The quest giver is F'hobhas, located at The Bonfire in Central Thanalan (x:23, y:13). You will need to reach level 19 or higher in Blacksmith, Carpenter, Goldsmith, Weaver, Armorer or Leatherworker to accept the quest. You will need Catalysts named Carbonized Matter to meld Materia into your armor. You can find these catalysts while gathering with botanist, miner and fisher.
To attach Materia also has risks. If failed, you will lose not only Carbonized Matter but also Materia. If your own crafting level is not high enough, you’d better ask for others’ help. Of course, you can take some FFXIV Gil to ask the attaching Materia trader to help you.

What are Treasure Maps?
Treasure maps are a somewhat lucrative piece of side content that work like this: you decipher a timeworn treasure map in your inventory which gives you a little zoomed in chunk of map with an X on it, real pirate-like.
First of all, if you’re using the treasure maps yourself, you’ll need to complete the quest Treasures and Tribulations to gain the actions to interact with them. This will let you decipher (right click > decipher) the map, and let you dig for treasure when you find the location.
The deciphered map is found under your key items section of the inventory. You figure out where in the overworld that location is, go there, and dig for treasure (“/ac dig” or put it on your hotbar). A treasure chest appears, you try to open it, a bunch of monsters attack you, you defeat them, and then for reals open the chest and claim some unlikely rewards.
For some types of maps, there is also a chance that a portal will spawn, which takes you and your party into a fabulous treasure dungeon where you can earn MORE goodies. The highest level maps currently available are the level 80 Timeworn Zonureskin Maps, which have a chance to spawn a portal to The Dungeons of Lyhe Ghiah.
What are the Rewards for Treasure Hunting?
Treasure hunting is profitable for good reason. It’s an exclusive source of some minions, decorations, and crafting materials used for making glamour gear. It’s also a good source of materia, cracked clusters, and elemental crystals and clusters. You’ll also pick up some gil, tomestones, and intermediate crafting materials. Some of these items are only found once you get to the higher floors, so you’ll have to get lucky.

In the highest level treasure dungeon, the Dungeons of Lyhe Ghiah, you can find the Wind-up Fuath minion, the Stuffed Fuath tabletop decoration, the Insatiable Orchestrion Roll, and the glamour crafting materials Indigo Cloth and Fireglass Leather. The Indigo Cloth is also a potential reward from defeating the chest-guarding enemies prior to entering the dungeon’s portal.
The older dungeons still have a few exclusive drops, mostly housing items, orchestrion rolls, glamour crafting materials, and an emote. There are also a few titles you can get from various treasure hunting activities. These can be found under Achievements > Battle > Treasure Hunt.
Where do I Get Maps?

Treasure Maps are tradable, so you can always buy them from the marketboard. If you’d like to grab them yourself, you’ll need a high level Botanist or Miner. These maps have a chance to appear as a hidden item when you gather from a level 80 node (visible starting at level 75).
You can collect one map every 18 hours, which you can track from your timers menu. My favourite places to quickly grab Zonureskin Maps are just north of Fort Jobb in Lakeland as a Miner or just south of Tomra in Kholusia as a Botanist.
Keep in mind these items are unique, so you can only hold one of them in each inventory location. I keep one deciphered in my key items, and one each in my inventory, chocobo saddlebag, and each of my two retainers’ inventories.
Timeworn Zonureskin Maps come from level 80 nodes and can drop portals to The Dungeons of Lyhe Ghiah.
Timeworn Gazelleskin Maps come from level 70 nodes and can drop portals to The Lost Canals of Uznair or The Shifting Altars of Uznair.
Timeworn Thief’s Maps come from the two Uznair dungeons and can drop portals to The Hidden Canals of Uznair.
Timeworn Dragonskin Maps come from level 60 nodes and can drop portals to The Aquapolis.
Also of note are Unhidden Leather Maps which drop from < Level 60 treasure maps.
Where is the Treasure Chest Location?
Clicking on the deciphered map will open up your larger map of the zone showing aetherytes, allowing you to teleport to the area easily. If you’re not so good at locating the treasure chests yourself from the scrap of map you’ve deciphered, there is a site here with maps of the possible chest locations for the different kinds of treasure maps.
How Many People Do I Need to Bring?
A competent group of four level 80 players can run through The Dungeons of Lyhe Ghiah, but the more people in the party, the more comfortably and smoothly it will go. Obviously you may have to compete with more people for the rolled loot, but maybe those people also bring their own maps for more chances to find dungeons in the first place.
There’s a section in the party finder called ‘treasure hunt’ where you can create or join parties looking for people on the same world to do this content with. The typical etiquette I’ve seen (at least on Light DC in EU) is that everyone brings a map or two, and you go through them hoping to spawn portals to the dungeon.
I prefer FFA (free-for-all) parties where everyone can roll need on everything, but you do also sometimes see ‘owner needs’ parties where only the owner of the current map you’re on rolls need, and everyone else rolls greed. Be sure to note what kind of party it is before you start.
It is also worth mentioning that for older treasure hunt dungeons like The Aquapolis, your level will not be synced down, but your ilvl will. The result is that you’ll keep all your sweet level 80 skills and rotations, but you’ll still need a group of people or else you will die. The actual monsters from the lower level treasure map itself you can defeat easily at a higher level.
